LATEST HAPPENINGS FROM THE CLUB
Strong fan support at our first two home games & terrific to see many of our past players & officials at the function last round in addition to player parents & partners & other newbies following the Bulldogs.
Welcome to North Heidelberg Sporting Club.
There has been plenty of optimism over the pre-season & justifiably so with a steady list of recruits plus what we have at the club coupled with a list of young talent coming through as evident with the U/19s results against very good opposition to date.
Plenty of work to do for the seniors, it will turn around quickly & more on that shortly.
Netball recommenced last Friday evening & of the R1 of grading games, it was a domination with some convincing performances that augurs well for the year.
Off-field from the President, his words were “to all our committee extending to our volunteers who are involved in preparation during the week & of a match day we thank you for your efforts. Over the last fortnight, we have put on a good show for the football follower to enjoy their day at the local footy”.
For football on Saturday/Sunday this weekend all games are away so please take note of the location & times.
SENIORS
Not the kind of start for the big boys being 0-2 earlier in the year & after a creditable performance against Heidelberg in R1 we were bitterly disappointing against the Bulls last Saturday.
Is it a case of few getting ahead of themselves & as those at the club in the know have said a few times if you want to play like millionaires or not do the team things consistently & with intent, we are back in the pack very quickly. Remember it is a quality competition we play in & any side without the necessary will to win, you will pay the consequences as evident last weekend. As a group was it more an aberration & if yes hopefully we can put it down to a bad day & if that is our one “shocker” for the year we move on but learn from it.
This weekend up at Hurstbridge is a must, it will be a tough assignment to earn a possession where we will need to roll our sleeves up & get back to the basics – covering ground, chasing, harassing, protecting your buddy with the pill etc. That is what we are renowned for, it’s our D & A & once that is placed the skillset comes to the fore.
Only 2 games down, no need to panic but for the seniors, the season starts now.
SENIOR WOMEN
Had our first official home game in over 20 seasons last Sunday playing Montmorency & the ladies acquitted themselves well.
With many first-timers, the squad is getting better by the week & we look forward to their development over the year.
I know Shannon & Phil are thrilled with the improvement & the gelling of the team which to be honest is only 4-6 weeks in the making.
Keep up the good work.
DEVELOPMENT
Very pleasing, and fantastic to have solid depth at our disposal where realistically there are up to 10 players possibly vying for senior selection on a weekly basis.
There is some real talent in this team & if the list can stay together for the year, waiting in the wings for a call up there are more wins in store. The run & carry was extremely good & with a number of young players 22 & under it throws up many possibilities for the future.
Like the seniors another test beckons at Hurstbridge who have had the wood over us recently in development so one to get back.
Come prepared.
UNDER 19s
First off it is a terrific bunch of young players we have assembled, firstly as people, then as footballers & in support we have a solid contingent of parents that make an U19s game at the footy an enjoyable one.
We have been fortunate to have victories by 1 & 6 points respectively in R1 & 2 against well-credentialed teams & another test on Saturday morning against traditional power Eltham. When you consider that we have around 20-22 players with no full bench last Saturday & a top-up from Yarrambat U17s in R1 – who we thank YJFC & the lads for their contribution, overall it is an amazing effort by the group to date.
Anyone know of some boys eligible for U19s not connected with a current club or thinking of their future well we could be the right fit for you. At 2-0, yes we will look at it one game at a time but it is a talented team you/they would join with a real possibility of finals action in September.
If that’s not an incentive, I’m not sure what is.
Quality coaching with Nigel Bugeja & Nathan Skudutis. Training of a Monday & Thursday at Top Up Labour Park (Shelley Street, Heidelberg Heights) from 5.30pm.
